<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Polycrystalline iron is implanted with nitrogen ions with high doses at room temperature. During nitrogen ion implantation iron is doped with carbon by recoil implantation. The formation and the transformation of iron carbonitrides and iron carbides are investigated by high‐voltage electron microscopy. The implantation‐induced phase formation of iron carbonitride phases are discussed.</jats:p>
