The thorium periodate is soluble in aqueous KOH and KThIO<jats:sub>6</jats:sub><jats:bold>·</jats:bold>4H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O can be precipitated from these solutions. The zirconium, hafnium and both thorium periodates are shown by EXAFS to consist of edge‐sharing chains of MO<jats:sub>8</jats:sub> and IO<jats:sub>6</jats:sub> units, IR and Raman studies indicate protonation of periodate in the MHIO<jats:sub>6</jats:sub> modifications.
