<jats:p>Recently, the ability of chlorination to adequately meet the possible future requirements for effective disinfection has been questioned. As demand for water grows, as industrialization and increasing population density produce continually greater impairment in the quality of available supplies, and as standards for hygienically safe water become stricter, the task of disinfection will become even greater and more difficult. This article discusses doubts about the effectiveness of chlorination to meet this increased responsibility in comparison with other existing or foreseeable methods of disinfection.</jats:p>
