AbstractThe luminescent properties of crystals of the complex formed by manganese(II)chloride with 3‐ethyl‐4‐methylpyridine hydrochloride were studied at different temperatures by measurement of absorption, excitation, reflectance, and luminescence spectra. From the reflectance and excitation spectra in this compound 4T1g, 4T2g and 4A1g, 4Eg energy levels are found. It was established that there is a tetrahedral coordination of the manganese (II) ion, which brings about a green luminescence. The mechanism of the process of absorption and emission is explained in terms of the theory of the configurational model. The parameters required for plotting a configurational coordinate diagram were computed. Theoretically determined values for the maxima of excitation and luminescence are in good agreement with those determined experimentally. It is established that the phenomenon of luminescence is due to the 4T2g → 6A1 transition.
