<p>A cationic bisphosphine assembled by a modular synthetic concept and carrying a paramagnetic<italic>S</italic>= 1/2 tungsten centre in the backbone shows an unusual spontaneous splitting of nitric oxide assisted by H atom transfer steps.</p>
