<jats:p>Most research directions in the context of cyber-physical systems have focused on developing computing foundations for designing, analyzing, and reasoning about systems being constructed from scratch. However, an equally important issue is to develop sound methods for transforming existing real-time embedded systems to ones that conform with standards of modern cyber-physical systems. This essay proposes several research directions for achieving such transformation techniques.</jats:p>
