<jats:p>Remembering (almost not meeting) Beckett … sitting in a café atop a department store in 1976 with a friend having tea, figuring he’s gonna come out of rehearsals for <jats:italic>Footfalls</jats:italic> at the Royal Court around lunch time to go eat next door, hopefully, and back thereafter, let’s ambush him at 2 o’clock. Went over from rooftop place across Sloane Square just as he was opening the weighty door elegantly for Billie (Whitelaw).</jats:p>
