It is a truly massive tome, consisting of 1,160 pages, a further 21 pages of appendices, 24 figures in the text, and ten separate charts contained in a folder in the rear cover. To understand its significance, this article considers it in the context of the time of its publication, but also with an awareness of the author’s distinctive personality and powerful sense of mission. </jats:p>
