Employment today is central to the construction of social relations and the determination of social status, but it remains a marginal concern within the field of sociology. The crisis in employment has forced sociology to confront its own limitations. As a field traditionally focusing on the enterprise, workshop or occupation, and concerned with the analysis of workplace groups, communities and relations, it now faces difficulties in extending its scope to the study of the transformations under way within the labour market. This article begins with an overview of the issue of women's employment, and builds on the findings of recent empirical research to substantiate the proposition that even analysis restricted to the `classic' themes of work must today incorporate the sociology of employment.
