<jats:p>A europium(III) coordination compound based on thiopheneacrylic acid (Htpa), triaquatris[3-(thiophen-2-yl)prop-2-enoato-κ<jats:sup>2</jats:sup>
<jats:italic>O</jats:italic>,<jats:italic>O</jats:italic>′]europium(III)–3-(thiophen-2-yl)prop-2-enoic acid (1/3), [Eu(C<jats:sub>7</jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>S)<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>(H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>]·3C<jats:sub>7</jats:sub>H<jats:sub>6</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>S or [Eu(tpa)<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>(H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>]·3(Htpa) (<jats:bold>1</jats:bold>), where tpa is the conjugate base of Htpa, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Compound <jats:bold>1</jats:bold> crystallizes in the trigonal space group <jats:italic>R</jats:italic>3. The structure of <jats:bold>1</jats:bold> consists of a discrete molecular complex [Eu(tpa)<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>(H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>] species and the Htpa molecule. In the crystal, the two components are involved in O—H...O [ring motif <jats:italic>R</jats:italic>

<jats:sup>2</jats:sup>(8)] and C—H...π hydrogen-bonding interactions. These interactions were further investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis, which showed high contributions of H...H, H...C/C...H and H...O/O...H contacts to the total Hirshfeld surfaces.</jats:p>
