ABSTRACT The goals of enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding can best be achieved in a literature class through the use of specific, measurable performance objectives. Activities in themselves are meaningless if there are no precisely defined learning outcomes. Literary skills in a foreign language must be carefully built and sequenced. A four‐year French curriculum for developing literary skills and competencies is proposed. Performance objectives are listed for the first two levels. The conclusion is offered that a carefully developed program based on the attainment of realistic objectives will offer variety in learning and a feeling of success to the student. These should lead him more directly to understanding, enjoyment, and appreciation.
