A nomenclature for the organization of biological membranes is proposed. The terms primary (composition), secondary (transverse and lateral distribution), tertiary (membrane stacking/unstacking), and quaternary (membrane‐membrane, cell‐cell interactions) levels of organization are used by analogy with protein structure, but at each level the membrane organization is more complex and dynamic than protein structure.
