We report the genome sequence, in five contigs, of a methicillin-resistant
<jats:named-content content-type="genus-species">Staphylococcus aureus</jats:named-content>
isolate designated M1. This clinical isolate was from the index patient of a methicillin-resistant
<jats:named-content content-type="genus-species">Staphylococcus aureus</jats:named-content>
(MRSA) outbreak in Copenhagen, Denmark, that started in 2003. This strain is sequence type 8 (ST8),
<jats:italic>spa</jats:italic>
type t024, and staphylococcal cassette chromosome
<jats:italic>mec</jats:italic>
element (SCC
<jats:italic>mec</jats:italic>
) type IVa.
