<jats:p xml:lang="en">The concept of self-identity has developed from Freud through Erik Erikson's work and that of Karen Horney, Daniel Levinson and others, and is an important tool for a biographer. The contributions of these thinkers are illustrated by the example of Stalin, which shows the need for a concept of psychological "mistaken identity" that is contained in the psychological thought of Karen Horney.</jats:p>
