I appreciate the comments on my recent article on reducing prescription costs. In revising and shortening the paper prior to publication I removed many of the caveats to the use of "quantity discounting." Snodgrass has pointed them out: fear of abuse of a large quantity of medication and pricing the medication out of an immediately affordable range even if the total cost over time is reduced.
It is clear that chronically used medications are more likely to be amenable to "quantity discounting"—for them, savings can occasionally be considerable, as noted in the example given in the paper.
