<jats:p>The hypothesis formulated by Usener and Diels that Theophrastus’ <jats:italic>De sensibus</jats:italic> is a crucial source of relevant sections of the <jats:italic>Placita</jats:italic> is insufficiently supported by the evidence. Of the fifteen <jats:italic>Placita</jats:italic> chapters dealing with sense perception and cognition, only a few are related to the treatise.</jats:p>
