ABSTRACT The eponym Tardenoisian and Mesolithic site is not Fère-en-Tardenois (without "La"), but "La Sablonnière" in Coincy-l'Abbaye, a site with triangles (middle stage) wich was published by E. Taté in 1885. On a larger scale it is the whole Tardenois area, where A. de Mortillet (1896) identified 8 sites, which was the origin of the name given by G. de Mortillet in 1897. L'Allée Tortue in Fère-en- Tardenois is the eponym site of the Tardenoisian with trapezes (recent and late stages). The name "Sauveterrien" was given by L. Coulonges after the town "Sauveterre-la-Le- mance" (and not after the Martinet and Roc Allan sites). Other Mesolithic cultures were named after either areas or towns, or after sites.
