Around 1778 artistic activity in France was noteworthy for the role of Paris, the Salons, art criticism, and showed both rapid transformation and the persistence of' moderate neo-classicism. Particularly to be noted are technical innovations in engravings, a concern for the people, outline drawing used by David, a new style in portraiture (Chardin). Romantic tendencies appear in the ruins te be seen in landscapes, which accompanied a general return to French history, also seen in the troubadour fashion. The ideal of the Enlightenment is best expressed by David, whose art became more and more philosophical.
