<jats:p>This article presents a synthesis of evidence from fieldwork that has taken place on the Sainte Victoire Mountain since 1989. In particular, we assess the management and perception of this relatively marginal landscape, where cultural processes would have influenced the relationships that people had with natural processes. As with many Mediterranean landscapes, geomorphological processes are of fundamental importance : we consider the phases of erosion, and whether people or climatic processes caused these. We assess the extent to which such processes had an effect on human activity. The final theme is that of the organisation of the landscape in terms of its structure and evolution.</jats:p>
