  • Beschreibung:
An attempt to identify some aristocratic relations of the poet Martial. It is proposed to view Novius Vindex (Epigr. IX. 43-44) as a son of Novius Priscus, a friend of Seneca's who was exiled in 65 (Tacitus, Ann. XV. 71,3) and to identify Lupus, who appears among the guests at the cena of X. 48, as P. Iulius Lupus, suff. 98. The author examines the possible correspondances between some relations of Martial and Hadrian's friends, so as to specify Publius' s identity (Epigr. I. 109, II. 57, VII. 72, VII. 87, ?X, 98), there being grounds to establish a connection with the figure of young Hadrian. He then suggests recognizing the eloquent aristocrat Atticus (Epigr. VII. 32, IX. 99) as a son of Statilia Messalina, who was descended from M. Valerius Messala Corvinus, and M. (Iulius) Vestinus Atticus, cos. 65 : a young man who would have therefore been cousin to the distinguished Vipstanus Messala of Dialogus de Oratoribus.
