<jats:p>SUMMARY. — Is Jean Cavaillès an historian of Mathematics? History of Science for him does not reduce to a causal succession of psychological and social facts; neither is it a phenomenological history of concepts. In the case of Mathematics, he tries to describe the modalities of an advance in knowledge at the level of the actual productions and transformations of the scientific contents. He seeks to characterize and explain this progress as depending upon a necessity both internal and rational, but not predictable. </jats:p>
