  • Beschreibung: Why has the image of Napoleon as a great man had such a lasting impression ? Right from his childhood, Napoleon knew how to use propaganda and make art serve his needs. Throughout his lifetime, he played a great part in the development of a real cult around his personality. Supported by the model of heroes from ancient epics, the image of Napoleon has become in itself timeless. Thus the legend of Napoleon was born. Its taking root in the country posed a problem. Does the persistence of the myth not correspond to an emerging form of popular cuit, the development of which could be explained by the religions turmoil that resulted from the Revolution ? Deprived of their religious references, some of the French people worshipped Napoleon like a God, whilst awaiting his return.
