  • Beschreibung:
Biosecurity in duks farms.
Duck and waterfowl farming techniques vary according to the physiological and biological characteristics of the species reared (muscovy ducks, pekin ducks, mules, geese), and to the production mode used. Sanitary risks include slurry management in productions on slats (muscovy or pekin ducks), and frequent mulching for other productions. Protection from wild birds is difficult to enforce in freerange systems (mules) or on farms where ducks have access to a pond (mallards). Production constraints require the intervention of numerous people, and sometimes of specialist companies, which necessarily carries health risks. The presence of healthy carriers of low pathogenic avian Influenza viruses in waterfowl farms means that these farms must be completely separated from other farms rearing more susceptible poultry species. Let us hope that biosecurity improvements will also have an effect on the frequent carriage of Chlamydophila psittaci and thus reduce the risk of zoonosis.
