• Beschreibung:
The image of 'a new edition of an old book' is used metaphorically in Henry James' The Ambassadors by Little Bilham to Strether about Chad, but he also looks back to the old Chad and raises the question of whether 'revisions' are always improvements. Comparing the first edition of James' novel textually with subsequent versions, but also critically exploring the process of expression within the text, this article argues that editorial processes are central to the construction and experience of the novel, both within the fiction and in its production and reception. Textual variation highlights the principle of revision throughout The Ambassadors that refines impression and intuition into understanding.
