<p> Analysis of two replicate sets of F₁ hybrids (n = 4) between the native Apache (Salmo apache) and introduced rainbow (S. gairdneri) trouts indicated that overall intermediacy in characters did not occur. Careful case-by-case evaluation of the nature and source of variation in wild trout populations in the West must be given to prevent erroneous taxonomic conclusions and mismanagement of this valuable natural resource. </p>
