• Beschreibung:
Drying patterns in soil caused by a more rapid rate of water evaporation from the retention zone after NH₃ injection are described. Quantitative data from pot and field observations show the development of moisture gradients inclined toward the center of the retention zone from the periphery, after different incubation times and periods of exposure. These patterns tended to persist over a period of several months even when pots of soil were subjected to alternate wetting and drying. A number of explanations for these NH₃-induced drying patterns are considered and their possible agronomic significance is discussed.
