<p>It is generally believed that the reception of the art of Georges Seurat from the 1920s to the 1960s was shaped by modernist art historians and critics in the United States, Britain, and France by means dominated by formalism. This view overlooks the interpretation of Seurats painting by André Breton, Surrealisms main theorist. Although the Surrealist Seurat initially seems entirely unlikely, Bretons lifelong fascination with the artist and long-standing espousal of the dialectical method ultimately yielded not only a new, counterintuitive interpretation of Seurats work but also a rethinking of the entire "project" of modern art itself.</p>
