• Beschreibung:
The demand of the Iroquois for and the eventual return of eleven wampum belts then held by the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, to the Six Nations Reserve in Canada has attracted some notice, including an article in Ethnohistory by William N. Fenton in 1989. The reasons are several, among them the legal and ethical issues involved in the repatriation of objects now in various museums. Documentary evidence inadvertently overlooked by the various principals involved in the return suggests that these belts are not those they were presumed to be, pointing to another type of issue that this case illustrates.
