• Beschreibung:
It is possible to assess the degree of Italian vocal music penetration into the general public in France by analyzing French publishing activities in the second half of the XVIIth and the early XVIIIth centuries. The first "airs" can be found at the very end of the XVIIth, particularly in the decade from 1697 to 1707, in Christophe Ballard's Recueils des meilleurs airs italiens. These songs are by French composers writing in the Italian style, as well as by imported Italian composers. They are also the forerunners of the first cantatas to be published in Frence.
