  • Beschreibung: This article presents for the first time a description of the hydraulic mechanisms of the blast furnace at the St. Maurice Forges. The authors reconstruct the events surrounding their development between 1736 and 1741. First the topography of the ironworks' site is established in terms of the watercourse that governed the choice of the site. Next the historical evaluation of the source and of the creek's hydraulic energy is examined. An overview of the initial project of the ironmaster, Pierre-François Olivier de Vézin, and of his modifications provides the historical background for the construction of the ironworks. Following a review of the operation of waterwheels, a detailed analysis of the difficulties encountered in lighting the blast furnace leads to an attempted reconstruction of its bellows mechanisms. The conclusion presents some thoughts on the multidisciplinary approach in terms of the building of the ironworks in the 18th century and their development in the 20th century.
