• Beschreibung:
This paper considers how the authors of "Le Diable à Paris" (1844-1846) purport to make modern Paris legible. What kinds of cultural and aesthetic authority are claimed by the editors, writers and caricaturists who produce the 'panoramic literature' so fashionable in the mid-nineteenth century? Gavarni's graphic design of the book's frontispiece constructs a portrait of the editor that suggests both the artistic ambitions and commercial role of the anthology's publisher, Pierre-Jules Hetzel. Moreover, it illustrates modes of visuality that are central to both the social experience of urban initiates and the professional equipment of cultural producers who make their living by representing the manners, fashions and ideas of the capital.
