  • Beschreibung: Parental sex preferences for children (particularly sons) have been well-documented in a wide variety of countries, but their impact on fertility is subject to question. Previous analyses have been fraught with methodological problems and have yielded conflicting findings. A new measure of the influence of sex preferences, which avoids many of the problems inherent in previous measures, is applied to data from the Korean National Fertility Survey. The results indicate sex preferences influence fertility and family planning in Korea but will not be a major obstacle to further fertility declines, despite the continuing strength of the preference for sons.
