  • Beschreibung: The current unrest and tension pervading the South African universities arises directly from their view of the established South African racial pattern. The English-language universities are playing a role which aims at innovation and change in this pattern, whereas the other universities are concerned primarily with preservation of existing practice. Attitudes of holders of top positions in South African universities towards schooling and marriage with White groups other than their own and towards segregation of the races were analysed. Clear contrasts were found between attitudes of academics at English-language universities and those at the other South African universities, which are predominantly Afrikaans. It is suggested that these attitudinal differences of leading staff members are related to the contrasting reactions of English-language and other universities to the government policy of apartheid.
