• Beschreibung:
The present paper is an anatomical study of the leaf nectaries of 65 species of Byttneria (Sterculiaceae) which comprise the whole area of the genus and its morphological variations. The first bibliographic account on this topic is that of Nieuwenhuis (1907) who describes the nectaries of B. pilosa; later Zimmermann (1937) mentions the nectaries of B. pilosa and B. cordata. Finally Hallé illustrates the external aspect of these glands in B. dahomensis, B. ivorensis and B. guineënsis. This paper includes an analysis of the bibliography on nectaries taking special account of the nectaries of Malvaceae, which are very similar to those of Byttneria. For the anatomical study herbarium material was used and for the ontogenetical one, fresh material of cultivated plants. A list of the samples studied is given at the end of every species description. In Byttneria, there is generally one nectary per leaf, situated on the underside of it, on the central vein. In certain species, there are 3 or 5 nectaries per leaf, which are distributed on the principal veins. In excepcional cases, there are also nectaries on the petioles. This genus presents 2 fundamental types of nectaries, which are named respectively, uniapertured and multiapertured. The former present, when examined superficially, a single aperture bordered by lip-shaped prominences.
