• Beschreibung:
The mating system of walnuts, the genus Juglans, is characterized by a protandrous-protogynous dimorphism, a form of heterodichogamy. Controlled crosses of J. regia indicate that this system is probably regulated by a single dominant-recessive factor, with protogyny dominant. Data from J. hindsii show that the two mating types are reciprocal, so mating is incompletely disassortative. There is within-type overlap but little within-individual over-lap and thus little self-fertilization. A genetic model of this system predicts a stable polymorphism with both mating types at equal frequency. The effect of increases in overlap within-type is to alter the relative frequencies of the two protogynous genotypes, increasing the dominant homozygote. Data from J. hindsii support the predicted one:one phenotype ratio, but it was not possible to distinguish the protogynous genotypes for the more precise test of the model.
