• Beschreibung:
The advent of Gothic architecure has traditionally been examined as a spontaneous event that occurred in the Ile-de-France in the 1140s as a result of external artistic influences. This view is challenged, however, by considering the advent of the Gothic aesthetic in conjunction with the sudden proliferation of detached colonnettes in the architecture of the royal domain in the 1130s and 1140s. By examining the colonnette within an economic and historical context, I argue that practical issues of production, in addition to economic motivations, led to the detached colonnette becoming an integral element in Gothic architectural design, one that paves the way for the later, mature phases of Gothic.
