  • Beschreibung: In Mathias Spahlinger's composition roaiuGHFF (strange?) from 1981 for five jazz soloists and orchestra, two groups with diametrically opposed ways of playing music confront each other. For this reason, this essay explores not only the formal disposition and strategies of editing and montage that lead to the distinctive unpredictability of the musical development, but closely examines the effects of the encounter between composed and improvised music as well. In roaiuGHFF (strange?) a partial convergence of these two different approaches can be observed, which has less to do with an augmentation of the orchestral musicians' responsibility than with an intermittent asynchronous orchestral part, resulting in the work's highly energetic, anarchical and rugged sound.
