• Beschreibung:
Certain houses, landscape parks and gardens flourish as the backdrop to romance and drama. Undoubtedly, Teackle Mansion's remote location on the lower southern portion of Maryland's Eastern Shore in Princess Anne provided such a backdrop and its extensive garden set the stage for one of Maryland's greatest fictional love stories, The Entailed Hat (1884). The garden's creators were Littleton Teackle (1777–1848) and his wife Elizabeth (1783–1835), whose transatlantic 'romances' inspired the house and gardens, which remain isolated from external cultural manipulation of trends and style. The main influences were the majestic landscape at Chatelherault Park, near Glasgow, and Ashcraig, an intimate garden on Scotland's west coast. This paper will explore the connection between Scottish and early American gardening as depicted in the letters and diaries of Littleton and Elizabeth Teackle and their correspondents.
