Daily blood specimens abtained from 47 children with acute cholera were examined for vibriocidal antibodies. Vibriocidal titers rose rapidly. By the seventh day of illness about 90% of the children had a significant rise in titer in aginst the homologous serotype, and about 70% of the patients had significant rises against the heterologous serotype. Chlldren under 5 years of age responded to cholera infection less well than older children.Blood specimens collected from 130 cholera patients of all ages during the 6 months following haspitalization with cholera were also examined for vibriocidal antibodies. Vibriocidal titers fell rapidly af ter illness. At 6 months only 17.1% of patients had titers significantly higher than at the time of hospital admission. The fall in titer following infection was most marked among chil dren. Vibriocidal titers were higher 6 months after cholera vaccination than b months af ter symptomatic infection with a. cholerae.
