  • Beschreibung: Eight morphological variables were measured in 794 red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) collected at nine locations in southern France during three autumn hunting seasons. Correspondence analysis, discriminant analysis, and standard statistical tests were used to relate morphological measurements to sex, age, and collection area. There were significant differences in sex for all variables, especially body mass and wing length. Total length in conjunction with the presence or absence of spurs is an accurate and convenient criterion for classifying the sex of adults. There were also significant differences in most variables according to age. Geographical gradients were observed in six of eight variables and corresponded to altitudinal and climatic differences among collection areas.
