This publication combines the research relating to learning and learning consultancy within the field of literacy with the research relating to adult education. First of all, the publication offers an up-to-date and systematic overview of the literacy research along the research lines within research relating to adult education. Secondly, the results of a learning research project about learning justifications, motivations and drop-outs. Thirdly, the publication provides an overview of the learning consultancy within adult education and literacy. Finally, there is a presentation of learning consultancy concept, with the help of which the biographical and social as well as concrete aspects of learning processes may be reflected and supported. The results are based on the research project SYLBE (Systematische Perspektiven auf Lernbarrieren und Lernberatung in der Erwachsenenalphabetisierung, systematic perspectives of learning barriers and consultancy in adult literacy) within the scope of the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) programme Alphabund. The publication is aimed at scientists and educational practitioners.
