Le site antique de Chatain (commune de Faux-la-Montagne, Creuse), découvert fortuitement en 1994, a été remis en avant dans le cadre d’un travail de master, soutenu en 2015, et laissait présager des vestiges particulièrement bien conservés. Ceux-ci avaient été interprétés comme le secteur thermal d’une probable villa. Un projet de sondages a ainsi été initié en 2016 et les résultats ont effectivement permis de supposer qu’il s’agissait bien d’un édifice balnéaire. Une fouille programmée a donc été réalisée durant l’été 2017. Celle-ci a permis de confirmer la fonction des vestiges observés et d’établir le plan du bâtiment thermal, composé actuellement de cinq pièces (deux salles de services et trois de bains) avec notamment deux bassins. Ce bâtiment serait, de plus, précédé d’une vaste aire ouverte avec, possiblement, une entrée pavée au sud.
The roman site of Chatain (town of Faux-la-Montagne, Creuse), discovered by chance in 1994, was put forward as part of a master thesis defended in 2015 and foreshadowed vestiges particularly well preserved. These had been interpreted as the thermal sector of a probable villa. An excavation project was initiated in 2016 and the result suggested that we were in bath-house. A planned excavation was conducted during the summer of 2017. This excavation confirmed the function of the remains observed and established the plan of the thermal building, currently consisting of five rooms (two service rooms and three bathrooms) including two basins. This building would be preceded by a large open area with, possibly, a paved entry to the south.
