Préalablement aux travaux d’aménagement d’un nouveau quartier dans le coeur historique de Bordeaux, sur le site de “ l’Ilot Sud-Ouest”, une fouille archéologique préventive a été réalisée aux abords des berges de la la Devèze, ancien ruisseau qui traversait la ville. Cette opération s’est déroulée en trois phases dans le courant de l’année 2012 (fenêtres A et B en septembre, C et D en octobre puis E en novembre). Les occupations rencontrées couvrent une période de près de 2000 ans, depuis les remblaiements augustéens de cette zone humide aux fondations d’une habitation du XIXe s. Une voie et ses égouts, des bâtiments reposant sur un treillage de poutres de bois et des constructions de bords de quais (possibles murs d’entrepôt et batardeau) correspondent aux aménagements antiques. Parmi le mobilier archéologique du Bas-Empire, un lot d’objets en cuir se distingue : un fragment de l’avant d’une sandale, un lot de trois fragments d’une chaussure droite appartenant à une carbatina et un modèle de culotte pour femme inédit en contexte archéologique gallo-romain. Concernant les séquences d’occupation les plus récentes (Moyen Âge classique, Époque Moderne et Contemporaine), les découvertes archéologiques se sont inscrites dans la continuité des résultats des études historiques préalables. Les maçonneries mises au jour concernent soit l’organisation parcellaire, soit des bâtiments (comme des hôtels particuliers) qui se sont peu à peu installés de part et d’autre de la Devèze. De même, le mobilier archéologique associé à ces découvertes, bien qu’intéressant en soit notamment par la présence de lots de céramique homogènes et/ ou de quelques formes inédites, ne modifie pas la vision globale que nous avons des occupations de cet îlot et de leurs datations sur ces périodes.
Prima dei lavori di sviluppo di un nuovo quartiere nel cuore storico di Bordeaux, sul posto “ Ilot Sud-Ouest”, è stato effettuato un intervento archeologico preventivo ai margini delle rive del Devèze, un antico ruscello che attraversava la città. Lo scavo si è svolto in tre fasi nel corso del 2012 (finestre A e B in settembre, finestre C e D in ottobre e finestra E in novembre). Le occupazioni incontrate coprono un periodo di quasi 2000 anni, dalle otturazioni augustee di questa zona umida alle fondamenta di una dimora del xixe secolo. Una strada et le sue fognature, edifici poggianti su un traliccio di travi in legno e construzioni lungo le banchine (possibili muri di magazzino e cassero) corrispondono alle antiche sistemazioni. Tra i mobili archeologici del Tardo Impero, spicca un set di articoli in pelle : un frammento della parte anteriore di un sandalo, una serie di tre frammenti di una scarpa dritta appartenante a una carbatina e un modello di mutandine da donna, inedite in un contesto archeologico gallo-romano. Per quanto riguarda le più recenti sequenze di occupazione (Medio Evo classico, periodo Moderno e Contemporaneo), le scoperte archeologiche fanno parte della continuità dei risultati degli studi storici preliminari. Le murature riguardano l’organizzazione della trama o gli edifici (come palazzi) che gradualmente si sono insediati su entrambi i lati della Devèze. Allo stesso modo, i mobili archeologici associato a queste scoperte, sebbene interessante di per sé, in particolare per la presenza di lotti omogenei di ceramica e/ o di alcune forme inedite, non modifica la visione globale che abbiamo delle occupazioni di questo quartiere e delle loro datazione in questi periodi.
Prior to development work for a new district in the historic heart of Bordeaux, on the site of the “ Îlot Sud-Ouest”, a preventive archaeological excavation was carried out in the vicinity of the banks of the Devèze, an ancient stream that used to flow through the city. The operation was conducted in three phases in the course of 2012 (area excavations A and B in September, C and D in October, and then E in November). The settlements encountered cover a period of nearly 2000 years ranging from the back-filling of this wet zone in the time of Augustus to the foundations of a nineteenth-century habitation. The development in Antiquity included a roadway and its drains, buildings resting on a trelliswork of wooden beams and waterside constructions (possible warehouse walls and a cofferdam). Among the archaeological material from the Late Empire a batch of leather items stands out : a fragment of the front part of a sandal, a set of right shoe fragments from a carbatina and a model of a woman’s undergarment not found before in a Gallo-Roman archaeological context. Concerning the more recent sequences of occupation (classical Middle Ages, Modern and Contemporary times), the archaeological discoveries are consistent with the results of previous historical studies. The masonry work unearthed relates either to the parcel layout or to buildings (such as mansions) that gradually arose on either side of the Devèze. Likewise, the archaeological material associated with these finds, although interesting in itself and especially through finds of uniform batches and/ or a few novel forms of ceramics, does not change the overall view we had of occupations of this block and of their dating to these periods.
