In the middle Rhone valley exists a diversity of composition for the clay associations identified in the rocks from Miocene to Pleistocene. The illite clay associations are typical of the sediments carried by the Rhone away on a long range. Montmorillonite clay concentrations are inherited from the country rocks, and so appear as having a local signification. Thus, the composition of clay associations depends more on the parent rocks than on the climate.
Dans la vallée du Rhône moyen apparaît une certaine diversité de composition des assemblages argileux, dans les formations allant du Miocène supérieur au Pléistocène. Les cortèges à illite sont caractéristiques du système rhodanien principal. Les concentrations en montmorillonite ont un caractère plus ou moins local, lié à un héritage à partir des matériaux encaissants. Ces faits mettent en évidence l'influence effacée du climat et le rôle essentiel des roches sur la composition des associations argileuses dans cette portion de vallée.
