Le réseau de correspondance d’Albrecht von Haller compta parmi les plus puissants de l’histoire moderne. L’article se propose de reconstruire et d’analyser tant le contexte de son développement que sa tradition manuscrite. Ces deux aspects sont essentiels pour interpréter un tel corpus de sources, puisque, d’un côté, ils donnent des renseignements sur l’image qu’avaient d’eux-mêmes les acteurs du réseau et, de l’autre, ils permettent d’éclairer la représentativité des lettres conservées. Un accent particulier est mis sur la distinction entre les niveaux privé et public de communication ainsi qu’entre représentation de soi et pratiques effectives.
Albrecht von Hallers Korrespondenznetz gehört zu den mächtigsten der ganzen Frühen Neuzeit. Im Folgenden werden sowohl sein Entstehungskontext als auch seine Überlieferungszusammenhänge rekonstruiert und analysiert. Beide sind für die Interpretation eines solchen Quellenkorpus essentiell, indem sie zum einen über das Selbstverständnis derNetzakteure Auskunft geben und zum anderen die Repräsentativität der Überlieferung erhellen. Besonderes Gewicht wird dabei den klaren analytischen Unterscheidungen zwischen privaten und öffentlichen Kommunikationsebenen sowie zwischen Selbststilisierungen und Praktiken beigemessen.
Albrecht von Haller’s correspondence is, in its range, one of the most impressive of modern times. Here the context in which the correspondence took place and its manuscript tradition are discussed and analysed. These combined approaches provide essential insights into the corpus : they illuminate the self-images of the different correspondents and also the extent to which the archive is representative of the entire correspondence as it once existed. Special attention is paid to distinguishing between public and private communication, and also between strategies of selfpresentation and the reality of scholarly life.
