As a result of its remoteness from Buenos Aires and its harsh climatic conditions, Patagonia did not attract many people up to the end of the twentieth century. Its economy relied heavily on sheep breeding and the exploitation of its marine resources, in particular its marine mammals. Then, new activities gradually appeared, mainly along the atlantic facade, sometimes evolving slowly, sometimes quickly, bringing about a radical reorientation of the region''s economy. The coast of the Chubut province is an example of this evolution. Fishing, industry and tourism today contribute to the integration of this remote region not only nationally but also in the global economy. The continuation of this opening up is in jeopardy as a result of the country's present economic crisis.
Par son éloignement de la métropole, Buenos Aires, et ses conditions naturelles difficiles, la Patagonie est restée une région faiblement attractive jusqu''à la fin du XXe siècle. Les activités économiques de cet immense espace ont longtemps reposé sur l'élevage ovin extensif et sur l'exploitation des ressources de la mer, en particulier la chasse aux mammifères marins. Puis de nouvelles activités s'y sont développées, principalement sur la façade atlantique, à un rythme tantôt lent, tantôt accéléré, entraînant parfois une réorientation radicale de l'économie régionale. Le littoral de la province du Chubut témoigne de cette évolution. La pêche, le secteur industriel et le tourisme contribuent aujourd''hui à l'intégration de cette région périphérique à l'espace national et à l'économie mondiale. Mais la crise économique que traverse le pays actuellement compromet la poursuite de cette ouverture.
