Perception and Management of the environment : Views and Practices of the Irular of the Western Ghats, India. Residing on the edges of the Kongu plateau near the foothills of the Nilghiri, the Irular are a special people both as regards their social and religious organization as well as their economic activities and living conditions. Over the course of their history they have learned how to adjust their social system to the harsh constraints of their natural setting, and in spite of the many external pressures to which they are subjected, they still rely in great part on the resources they draw from their environment. A study of some of the long-held conceptions they have of their ecosystem and the type of thinking of the people illustrates the manner in which this population uses the space that surrounds it, from the forest right up to the poor arable land that is available to it.
Résidant aux confins du plateau du Kongu, à proximité des premières pentes des Nilghiri, les Irular constituent un peuple original tant par leur organisation sociale et religieuse que par leurs activités économiques et leurs conditions de vie. Ils ont su, au cours de leur histoire, ajuster leur système social aux particularités ingrates du milieu et malgré les multiples pressions externes qu'ils subissent, dépendent encore pour une large part des ressources issues de leur environnement proche. Un examen de quelques-unes des conceptions vernaculaires de leur écosystème et des catégories de pensée propres aux acteurs, illustre la manière dont cette société utilise l'espace qui l'entoure, depuis la forêt jusqu'aux maigres terres arables disponibles.
