La division du Roland d'Oxford en épisodes narratifs et l'agencement de ses structures formelles nous permettent de considérer les deux parties qui concernent Baligant (arrivée à Saragosse, bataille près de cette ville) comme d'habiles additions au texte — additions qui néanmoins détruisent son unité cérémonielle. L'étude des textes encore préservés du corpus rolandien (notamment le Ronsasvals occitan) permet de définir leur composition non comme le dérivé d'un archétype (texte fantôme de toute façon inconnu), mais comme le ré-agencement d'épisodes d'origines diverses. Le texte global est visualisé en différentes couches stratifiées et l'attention est concentrée sur un épisode — de forme probablement limousine au départ — où l'on peut percevoir la nature homosexuelle des relations oncle-neveu. Ces relations ont subi dans les nombreux manuscrits censure et transformations. L'analyse formelle permet d'atteindre les fondements sémantiques sous le mythe épique.
The division of the Oxford Roland into narrative episodes and the location of its formal structures enable us to see the two parts which concern Baligant (the arrival at Saragossa, the combat near Saragossa) as skilful additions to the text ; additions which nonetheless destroy its cérémonial unity. The study of the corpus of the Roland texts still preserved (including the Occitan Ronsasvals) leads to a definition of their composition not as derivations from an archetype (an unknowable phantom text in any case) but as the re-arrangement of episodes of diverse origins. The global text is visualized in layers of different strata and attention is concentrated upon one episode, probably of Limousin form at the outset, where the homosexual nature of the "uncle-nephew" relationship may be seen. The various manuscripts have subjected this relationship to censorship and transformation. Formal analysis reaches down to the semantic bedrock beneath the epic myth.
