Elles veulent apporter des arguments historiques, notamment pour le rattachement des Églises locales à l'idée de l'apostolicité de l'Église romaine. Les représentations des saints occupent parfois le tympan. Les inscriptions sont essentielles pour notre connaissance du culte des reliques, et elles nous incitent à nous interroger sur le passage d'un saint présenté comme modèle à un saint invoqué comme protecteur. Elles énumèrent les reliques déposées dans l'autel lors de la consécration d'une nouvelle église. Elles identifient les représentations des saints. On utilise les fêtes des saints pour dater les inscriptions. L'épigraphie souligne, pour les XIe-XIIIe siècles, une véritable inflation hagiographique. Autant d'éléments qui justifient qu'on la prenne en compte dans toute étude du culte des saints.

The inscriptions put forward historical arguments notably for the attachment of local churches to the apostolic college. The representations of saints sometimes fill the tympanum. The inscriptions are essential for our knowledge of the worship of relics and prompt us to investigate the route of a model saint to a holy protector. They list the relics placed beneath the altar at the time of the dedication of a new church and identify the representations of saints. The dates of the feasts of saints can be used to date the inscriptions. Epigraphy emphasizes a real hagiographie growth in the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries. So many elements justify taking epigraphy into account in study of the worship of saints.
