Dans les programmes iconographiques les plus réfléchis les inscriptions viennent souvent apporter confirmation, ou encore complément d’explication, voire commentaire qui va au-delà de l’image. C’est le cas d’inscriptions relatives à la Trinité qui empruntent le vocabulaire théologique et donnent parfois à elles seules le sens trinitaire en s’inspirant de commentaires allégoriques ou exégétiques. Il en va de même pour les inscriptions qui accompagnent les représentations de Marie, avec l’Enfant ou seule : tour à tour elles mettent en valeur la maternité divine, la virginité, la conception sans péché, l’Assomption et le Couronnement. On pourrait poursuivre cette étude avec la christologie ou la théologie sacramentelle. Les inscriptions offrent des clés de lecture qu’on ne saurait négliger dans l’interprétation de l’iconographie.
In the thoughtfullest iconographie Programms, the inscriptions provide often confirmation, or further information, or even commentary going beyond the picture. It is the case of the inscriptions relative to the Trinity that use the theological vocabulary and give sometimes only the trinitarian meaning by taking one’s inscription from allegorical and exegetic commentaries. It is the same for the inscriptions which accompany Mary, with the Child or alone : alternatively they valorize the Divine Motherhood, the Virginity, the Sinless Conception, the Assumption and the Coronation. It would be possible to continue this study by christology or sacramental theology. The inscriptions give keys to the reading that we could not neglect for the iconographie interpretation.
